Democracy Day, 2006


RTYC Portland/Vancouver
The Tibetan Community of Oregon and Southwest Washington celebrated 46th anniversary of the Tibetan Democracy Day on Saturday September 2nd at Camas Union Hall in Camas, WA. The chief guest of the event was former Chitue Wangchuk Dorjee la. Tsering Choephel la, President of NWTCA (Tibetan Association) was invited as a special guest.

The program began with a introductory speech by the President of RTYC Portland/Vancouver Tsewang Rigzin welcoming all the guests followed by singing of Mangtso Sarshey (Democracy song), Tibetan National Anthem and offering of traditional Tibetan scarf to the throne of His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

Wangchuk Dorjee la spoke in depth about the importance of the day and also shared his experience from his recent visit to Tibet. This was followed by a passionate speech by Tsering Choephel la on importance of Tibetan Youth Congress and the youth in general. Then Tsewang Rigzin addressed the gathering by requesting them to never lose focus of our main goal and continue to work toward's Tibet's Independence while celebrating these auspicious events.

The highlight of the evening was a cutural show by some of the finest ex-TIPA (Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts) artists: Sonam Tsering & Sonam Pelmo (Vancouver, WA), Tenzin Ngawang (MN), Sherap W. Sangpo (MN), Passang Lhamo (NY) and Pema Dorjee (Portland, OR). These artists performed both traditional and modern Tibetan songs and dances and were applauded throughout the show. The strong applause was an indication that the audience not only approve of their performances but they also appreciated a genuine Tibetan cultural show.

The official function concluded by thanking all the artists and guests and with Gorshey (Tibetan Circle Dance) by all ages through the night.
